Valium - Too Far Gone
Valium - Too Far Gone - Music Video
Local scene veterans have teamed up in the newly formed group Valium. They have released a music video to accompany their latest single Too Far Gone. A band that slips betwixt genres as a moray eel would through a net, the video melds their sense of humour and playfulness with a retro colour set that thoroughly suits their newest release.
It is clear from the offset that playing opposites off each other to make melodies is the strong point of Too Far…as Valium flit between the worlds of alt-music and Red Hot Chilli Pepper inspired beats. Blurring the lines between stoner rock and funk with thick, groovy bass lines and spaced out licks, Too Far… tells the story of a man mourning the choices of his lady friend and her decision to leave him. The frustrated, erotic energy brought to the table by this dynamic is the emotional vertebrate of the song, and only serves to improve it - after all, nobody wants to hear a song about things going well.
The darker theme of the lyrics compound with the crooning cry of the lead vocals shouldn’t work with the upbeat spirit of Too Far… but it does, conjuring images of highway cruising as the vintage themed video plays in the background. As with all good lyric videos, it is subtle in how it introduces parts of the song, playful with graphics and incapable of taking itself too seriously, mostly due to the garish pinks, purples and pastels that literally made me turn my brightness down.
Fun and funky, Too Far… has everything you want in a single. There's room to dance and singing is encouraged, with all the hallmarks of a great album if they can replicate the chemistry 7 times over. The song may be Too Far Gone but I haven’t gone far enough.
