Hello Casanova - Thinking Lately

The pop-rock revival of Northern Ireland continues with the latest release from Armagh quartet Hello Casanova. Their latest single sees them sound tighter than ever, powered by a more experienced spirit (most notably in the vocal performance, which improves with each release), which has resulted in one of their best releases yet.

One could certainly mistake the sunny, swinging opening riff and brash abandon of the percussion for a stylistically carefree number. However, a closer inspection from our intrepid reviewer reveals an underlying darkness. To hear this, one can listen no further than the chorus, which is themed by uncertainty. “I don’t know what I’ve been thinking lately” sings frontman Ethan Williamson, his stressed, fervent tone covering an added sense of seriousness. When combined with the brazen informality of the electric licks that frame each verse, TL takes on a whole new depth, one powered by an ambivalent anxiety that creates a new sense of delicious urgency around the track.

The juxtaposition between the breezy riffs, the indie-inspired mid-chorus ‘wooo’s’ and the shadowy heart of TL induces a sort of pleasant dysmorphia. The tune straddles worlds of both optimism and negativity, drawing and benefiting from both, like a wide grin that’s missing its front teeth. Poppy and smart, Thinking lately is another notch on the belt of Hello Casanova that helps cement them as one of the premier young bands in the country.
